Industry Consultation Webinar: DCCEEW’s Reform of Packaging Regulation
Add to Calendar
In addition to the recent webinar provided by the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) on the nation’s packaging reform, the National Design Standard Working Group will be hosting an interactive consultation session to expand on the Packaging Grading Framework under development by the Design Standard Working Group. The objective is to gain a broader range of input from participants on impacts, benefits and costs to the sector prior to the draft being reviewed by the Environment Ministers.
This information will provide added detail on Packaging Recyclability Grading that sits behind the Packaging Design for Recyclability in the Consultation Paper and survey released by DCCEEW. The consultation opened on Friday, 27 September and closes on Monday, 28 October at 5:00pm and can be located via the link. Reform of Packaging Regulation - Climate (dcceew.gov.au). The outcomes of the public consultation will inform any future Australian Government decisions on packaging reform.
The format of the session will be a facilitated presentation covering the following topics and then a moderated discussion.
- The role, purpose, and scope of the DSWG
- The design framework for the development of the Australian Packaging Recyclability Grading Chart (Global approaches) and the focus on materials that are being recovered from the Kerbside/CDS collection
- Explain the A-G definitions and then outline the Grading Chart for each packaging component.
- Highlight the Food Grade / Household products delineation in plastics. Explain the E-G packaging materials containing Harmful Chemicals & Automotive Oils, Paint, EPS, Corrosive & Oxidising materials that are not wanted in the kerbside system and the need for the development of an EPR program for these materials.
- Talk about Eco Modulation and its role in incentivising behaviour change with brand owners & manufacturers to improve the recyclability of their packaging. Discuss possible ‘Unintended Consequences’ and highlight concerns.
