APCO is seeking an independent non-executive director to join its board from 1 July 2022

7 April 2022

The Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation (APCO) is seeking an independent non-executive director to join its board from 1st July 2022.

The Australian Packaging Covenant (the Covenant - APC) is a national regulatory framework under the National Environment Protection (Used Packaging Materials) Measure 2011 (NEPM) that sets out how governments and businesses across Australia share the responsibility for managing the environmental impacts of packaging. The Covenant supports an industry-led component of a co-regulatory arrangement underpinned by the NEPM.

The Covenant is supported by a five-year Strategic Plan that is developed and implemented by the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation Ltd. (APCO), in consultation with Commonwealth, state and territory governments. Members contribute Membership fees that support the administration of the Covenant, the provision of services to Members and projects.

This includes enabling industry and government to deliver Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets, an important step on the pathway to a circular economy for Australia.

APCO helps companies of all sizes on this journey by providing the insights, resources and programs to meet their customers’ and governments’ expectations.

Expressions of interest are invited from experienced professional company directors motivated to contribute as an Independent Director to the strategy, leadership and commercial oversight of APCO. Primarily, APCO’s important role is in sustainably changing the supply chain eco system of packaging to design more sustainable packaging, increase recycling rates, recovery and reuse of materials to reduce packaging litter and develop a circular economy for used packaging materials.

The board comprises 3 independent, 3 brand owner, 3 industry association and 2 industry expert directors. Independent directors are remunerated.

Prior board experience is required and persons with experience and/or interest in product stewardship, sustainability of supply chains and the circular economy are encouraged to apply. Professional backgrounds in finance, legal, business or other disciplines will be highly regarded.

Candidates must demonstrate solid corporate governance and prior general business experience at CEO/Senior Executive level together with knowledge of regulatory environments, product stewardship and an understanding and/or experience with member owned and governed organisations.
